Melanosomes, the pigment granules that provide tissues with colour and photoprotection, are the cellular site of synthesis, storage and transport of melanin pigments. They are synthesised in mammalian skin melanocytes, in choroidal melanocytes and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells in the eye, and in melanophores (a class of pigment-containing cells) in lower vertebrates.

Here, we review the hierarchical structure, development, functions, and evolution of melanosomes.

A melanosome is an organelle found in animal cells and is the site for synthesis, storage and transport of melanin, the most common light-absorbing pigment found in the animal kingdom. Melanosomes are responsible for color and photoprotection in animal cells and tissues. Melanosomes are unique lysosome-related organelles present only in cells that make melanin, the major synthesized pigment in mammals. Genetic defects in  Pigmentation production is determined by three distinct elements: enzymes involved in melanin synthesis, proteins required for melanosome structure, and  21 Aug 2018 Melanin is a chemical compound that is distributed widely throughout the produce melanin granules inside organelles called melanosomes.

Melanin is produced inside small membrane-bound packages called melanosomes. People with naturally-occurring dark skin have melanosomes which are clumped, large and full of eumelanin. [50] [51] A four-fold difference in naturally-occurring dark skin gives seven- to eight-fold protection against DNA damage, [51] but even the darkest skin colour cannot protect against all damage to DNA.

Melanosomes and melanin

The composition of melanin and distribution of melanosomes determine the color of many mammalian tissues, including the hair, skin, and iris.

Quantity and ratio of melanin in cultures of senescent uveal melanocytes from eyes with various colored irises. These data show that the amount and types of melanin vary with iris color. The amount of pheomelanin (PM) remains fairly constant for different colored irides, but the total amount of melanin (TM) present (pheomelanin and eumelanin (EM)) is greater in dark-colored irides Evidence is presented that melanization of skin and other tissues forms an important component of the innate immune defense system.

They are involved in numerous critical biological functions in organisms across the tree of life. 2020-03-31 · Melanosomes are melanin-containing organelles that provide pigmentation and protection from solar UV radiation to the skin. In melanocytes, melanosomes mature and traffic to dendritic tips, where they are transferred to adjacent epidermal keratinocytes through pathways that involve microtubule networks and the actin cytoskeleton. Melanosomes are the melanin-containing organelles that are responsible for pigmentation of the hair and skin of mammals. Because melanosomes are visible under a light microscope, they are often regarded as a representative model for analyzing LRO biogenesis and transport (Nascimento et al., 2003; Wasmeier et al., 2008 ).
